James Alvarez is a versatile musician, composer, and trumpet specialist based in Southern California, known for expressive performances grounded in clarity, intention, and musical honesty.
As both a soloist and ensemble musician, he brings a refined, wholehearted voice to every setting, whether on the symphonic stage, in the recording studio, or within intimate chamber performances. His work reflects a deep respect for craft, collaboration, and the emotional power of music.
He currently serves as principal trumpet with both the LLS Orchestra and Millennial Choirs and Orchestras, and as principal cornet for both the Southland Wind Ensemble and Golden State British Brass Band. In addition to his performing roles, James is the resident composer for the LLS Orchestra, contributing original works and orchestrations to its concert repertoire.
James made his compositional debut with his Symphony in C, which premiered at the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall. He holds a Master’s degree in Classical Trumpet Performance from the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music and has appeared as a soloist in concertos by Alexander Arutunian and Alexandra Pakhmutova.
His performance credits include collaborations with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as guest conducting a full orchestra in Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9.

As an educator, James has coached brass sections for community, high school, and college ensembles, supporting students in the development of technique, musical understanding, and professional discipline. He has served as interim music director for both choir and band at the middle school level, and as interim choir director at the high school level, guiding young musicians through both artistic growth and ensemble leadership.
